Ofori Returning To Pirates After Disappointing AFCON Show

Ofori Returning To Pirates After Disappointing AFCON Show

There is no likely overseas move on the cards for Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Richard Ofori after a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations campaign for Ghana, sources have indicated.

Ghana are almost certainly knocked out of AFCON 2023 after their 2-2 draw against Mozambique last night at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan.

After it initially looked like the Black Stars had the game under control having scored first in the first and second half respectively to go 2-0 up, they squandered a two-goal lead in stoppage time to finish level and in third place in group B.

Critics have been hard on Ofori and some of his teammates for their performance.

Deep in stoppage time, Ofori conceded a corner kick from a ball which many felt could have been avoided, and from the resultant action Mozambique scored their equaliser to almost end Ghana's participation in the competition.

Ghana now awaits the results of other third-placed teams for their fate in the competition to be confirmed.

Ofori played all three games and captained.

In the DStv Premiership so far this season, the 30-year-old struggled for game time and has been behind Sipho Chaine and Melusi Buthelezi in the pecking order at the Buccaneers.

It was recently reported by the Siya crew that the Soweto giants have been open to listening to offers from abroad for the shot-stopper.

"Pirates have had plans to sell Richard Ofori abroad. With him going to the AFCON, the expectation was that he would attract interest if he did well. But for now, he will be returning to the club to fight for his place in the starting eleven as there seem to be no offers available," said the source.
