Mntambo Speaks On Financial Burden Local Ballers Face

Sekhukhune United star Linda Mntambo recently opened up about the financial pressure South African footballers are under.

Check it out!

What's the story?

In a short video that's doing the rounds on social media, Linda Mntambo details the struggles local footballers face when it comes to finances.

SA footballers have been stereotyped as being financially reckless, with countless cases of some of the most talented footballers the country has produced, going broke after hanging up their boots.

Mntambo spoke on why it's hard for ballers to keep things together financially, especially when they retire...

Mntambo discusses ballers under financial pressure

It's been well documented that a large amount of South African footballers struggle to keep their finances afloat during and after their playing days.

With Lerato Chabangu being the latest former baller to encounter financial trouble, essentially losing his all of his earnings from his successful career, finances and football is a tricky topic.

As easy as it might look to fans, seeing players working/training a few hours a day and living their dreams by taking the pitch and making solid earnings... a lot players are have their salaries spread thin, regardless of how much they're making and for how long.

Mntambo made a point of reminding people of just how difficult it is for footballers to become bread winners in their families from a young age.

"...And 90% of us footballers come from disadvantaged families. At home, they rely on you. So don't compare us to 'Dylan.' Dylan is a cheeseboy bru, he has a mom and a dad, when he gets paid, his money belongs to him. Whereas you, in Cape Town, they're waiting for you.

"You get a message on the 29th saying: 'Zev, my child, don't forget.' You hear your uncles saying: 'My boy, you see that game you played that one time? Ay it's the one,' and then he reminds you to not forget come the end of the month. It's not easy, bru," says Mntambo, painting a picture of how players from underprivileged backgrounds are burdened with looking after their families with the money they make, while players from more privileged backgrounds get to enjoy their salaries.

"We can lie to ourselves while we're here and on Instagram. Instagram is not life, [it's] lies! We post all the good stuff, but life? It's defeating us. We go to bed on sleeping tablets at night," concludes Mntambo.
