Former Kaizer Chiefs boss Ernst Middendorp has explained why he takes a strong stance against showboating after he was particularly criticised for not following the Amakhosi way in the past.

The German tactician, currently in charge of Cape Town Spurs in the Premiership, has spoken about his feelings on showboating many times over the course of his career and has once again addressed the issue, in an interview with Mahlatse Mphahlele.
During his first spell at Chiefs, Emmanual 'Scara' Ngobese's departure from the club was largely thought to come as a result of Middendorp wanting him to use less skills unless those flavourful moves on the field directly aided the team.
The two-time former Chiefs coach has gone into more detail about his dislike for showboating, which he believes players should "forget" about, but insisted he would never discourage players from showing off their talent if it proved productive and helpful.
"Good showboating is a description of a scenario I think every professional footballer should forget about," he told Prime Sports with Mahlatse.
"Using your skills, your dribbling skills, your one against one success or your one against two, fantastic. No coach in the world will stop this. But you know, sometimes you have players, they are around the box in the final third. You know they are very skilful, then you ask 'go into the box, shoot, to look for a penalty, put pressure on the defender'.
"Then you see a player taking the ball, running into the midfield, do the showboating, put the knee on the ball and so on. Now I'm asking each and everybody: 'do you want to see this?' And in the end you say 'why didn't we win? Why didn't we score?'
"Use your skills, use your dribbling skills, use your repertoire of tricks to the benefit of the team, to score. This is something that really has to be coached in a productive way.
"No coach in the world will stop you using tricks, but only using tricks to force an opponent, a defender, to foul you. That's what it is. The rest, forget about it, go to the marketplace and do your showboating there."

Middendorp, 65, finished second in the PSL in the 2019/20 campaign after missing out on the league title with Chiefs to Mamelodi Sundowns on the final day of the season.
