Argentina Boss 'Annoyed' With Messi After Brazil Incident

Argentina Boss 'Annoyed' With Messi After Brazil Incident

There is reportedly tension between Argentina captain Lionel Messi and 2022 FIFA World Cup-winning manager Lionel Scaloni – here is why.

In November, Scaloni, who has claimed two major honours since taking the job in 2018, surprisingly suggested he was considering his future with the team.

The manager sent shockwaves throughout Argentina when he said: "Argentina needs a coach who has all the energy possible, and who is well. I need to stop the ball and start thinking, I have a lot of things to think about during this time."

His comments followed the Albiceleste's 1-0 2026 World Cup qualifying victory over Brazil at the Maracana Stadium, a fixture that was steeped in controversy.

Argentina and Brazil supporters clashed during the national anthems, with Messi deciding to lead his teammates off the field and back into the dressing room until the unrest was de-escalated.

According to The Athletic, however, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner did this "without consulting" Scaloni, leaving the 45-year-old tactician and his coaching staff "agitated".

The Inter Miami superstar and his teammates eventually returned to the field and managed to claim all three points following a goal from defender Nicolas Otamendi.

Messi, meanwhile, was substituted late in the second half, having gone into the previous round of international fixtures with not much game time under his belt.

There have been suggestions Scaloni could step down from his post after the 2024 Copa America.
