Downs Go Top Of African Rankings Despite Losing

Mamelodi Sundowns have made a significant jump in the African club rankings and finally climbed above Al Ahly despite defeat against TP Mazembe in the CAF Champions League.

The Brazilians lost a CAF Champions League game for the first time across two seasons after a narrow 1-0 loss to Mazembe in their second Group A game on Saturday.

The last time Masandawana had lost a CAF Champions League match was back in April 2022 after going down 2-1 against Petro de Luanda in the quarter-final first-leg.

Following the latest FootballDatabase rankings published on Tuesday, Sundowns climbed up to number one spot in Africa with 1682 points and went above Al Ahly, who dropped down to second spot, four points behind the Brazilians.

The Red Devils' 1-1 draw against Young Africans was more damaging, as Yanga are one of the lowly-ranked sides, compared to the Ravens, who were in the top five prior to last weekend's CAF Champions League matches.

The win over Sundowns helped Mazembe climb up to fourth position in Africa with 1581 points, but are still way behind the Brazilians by 101 points.

From South Africa's big clubs perspective, after not taking to the field over the weekend, due to being out of the Carling Knockout and not in CAF tournaments either, Orlando Pirates remained unchanged in 25th position in Africa with 1462 points.

Kaizer Chiefs, who were also not in action over the weekend, however, dropped two places to 59th spot in Africa.

In the global rankings, Sundowns remained strongly positioned in 62nd spot, ahead of big European clubs such as Villarreal, Monaco, Rangers and Ajax Amsterdam.

With 1682 points, the Brazilians are just 24 points away from the top 50 clubs in the world.

In the world rankings, Pirates are ranked 421st while Chiefs are in 709th spot.
