Hunt's Mahlambi remarks causes online stir
Gavin Hunt's explosive interview with Peter Du Toit had many football fans debating on social media, with Hunt's story on ex-Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Phakamani Mahlambi receiving plenty of attention.
Hunt coached Mahlambi at Bidvest Wits, where the former prodigy won the PSL Young Footballer of the Season award, helping to inspire Wits to the 2016/17 Absa Premiership title, scoring six league goals for the team.
The 26-year-old has been without a club since Mamelodi Sundowns released him in 2022 and Hunt detailed some of Mahlambi's ill-discipline off the pitch.
"Biggest disgrace. Biggest waste of talent," says Hunt, who told a shocking story about Mahlambi spending a large amount of money on drinking:
"I was at a restaurant a couple of years ago, he was at Al Ahly then, he had left us [Bidvest Wits], they were having a good time, he had about six mates with him — because they [footballers] always have mates. They have money.
"Anyway, I call the waiter over and said 'What's the bill there so far' he said the bill was R45 000 so far, they were drinking Hennessy's and he's 21-years-old, I said to the waiter 'If you serve another drink there, I'm personally going to (makes fist gesture) you, I said 'You cancel that bill," recalled Hunt.
