Toronto Make Call On Mailula?

Toronto Make Call On Mailula?

There seems to have been an update over Cassius Mailula's future at Toronto FC in the MLS.

Toronto FC chiefs have warned that big personnel changes are going to be made at the club ahead of the 2024 MLS season, with there being a hint that a decision on Cassius Mailula's future has already been reached.

The Canada-based side finished the MLS Eastern Conference bottom of the table after suffering 20 league defeats in 34 matches, but there is a positive feeling around the club that better times are around the corner.

During an end-of-the-season review, Toronto general manager Jason Hernandez suggested that some transfers made during the 2023 campaign helped increase the team's "flexibility going into the off-season" and that "the expectation is that not everyone will return".

These quotes were carried by the club's official website, with Mamelodi Sundowns winger Mailula listed among the players who joined as part of the club's "rebuilding".

As per the website: "The process of rebuilding Toronto FC for the 2024 MLS season is underway. In fact, it began in the middle of the year with the flurry of moves after Jason Hernandez was named general manager with Latif Blessing, Cassius Mailula, Prince Owusu, and Luka Gavran joining the side, while Mark-Anthony Kaye and Matt Hedges departed."

Questions have been raised over Mailula's future in the MLS following his slow start, having made only three appearances after his arrival from Sundowns in July.

The 22-year-old's lack of game time and this MLS campaign having come to an end has severely damaged the attacker's chances of being named in Bafana Bafana's 2023 Africa Cup of Nations squad.

Hugo Broos' stubborn stance on the matter has led to rumours linking Mailula, who has a deal at the MLS club until 2026, with a temporary return to South Africa, but Toronto's latest website update might point to how the Reds view his future.
