Argentina Boss Explains Decision To Drop Garnacho

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has revealed why he did not call Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho up for international duty this week.

The 19-year-old winger made his debut for the 2022 FIFA World Cup champions in June in a 2-0 win over Australia after an impressive breakthrough season last term in England and since been given minutes on only another two occasions.

Garnacho was then called up for duty against during the September international break, but played only five minutes, while he did not make it off the bench in the October break in 2026 World Cup qualifying games against Paraguay and Peru.

For this week, meanwhile, Scaloni has overlooked the United player altogether, explaining the teenager has been left out largely due to his current form.

"The reason for not calling up Garnacho? Ale's non-selection is due to a form issue," he said, according to the Mirror.

"We don't like to bring players in and constantly leave them out or leave them out of the squad.

"Everyone wants to be there and it's great, but the human side plays and you have to make decisions.

"It would have been easy to bring him in, but in the last few call-ups he didn't get minutes and there are times when you have to make decisions, but he's a guy who's on our radar and he's going to continue to be there and he has a huge future."

Garnacho has scored just one goal in 16 appearances for the Red Devils in this campaign so far.
