Al Ahly Send Official Complaint To CAF After Downs Loss

Al Ahly have lodged an official complaint with African football's governing body, CAF, following their 1-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Things did not go according to plan for the Egyptian giants when they travelled to Tshwane for the first leg of their African Football League semi-final against Masandawana this past weekend.

The Red Devils were unable to rectify their awful form when travelling to South Africa as a Thapelo Maseko strike ensured that they remain winless on their travels to the nation.

After the game, Ahly head coach Marcel Koller felt that his players could have done better in attaining a positive result at Loftus Versfeld. However, the Swiss tactician also placed some blame on the match officials for the outcome, citing their inability to utilise VAR as a big reason for their defeat.

It seems the club shares its head coach's sentiments as they have now submitted a formal complaint to CAF addressing the poor officiating, feeling that they have been on the receiving end in continental competition this season.

"This morning, the club sent a letter to the Confederation of African Football (CAF)," an official statement from Ahly read.

"Regarding the repeated arbitration errors against the Al Ahly team, especially in the last three African matches.

"Both in the Super Cup match with USM Algerian, which took place in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on 9/15/2023, or on Al Ahly's first match in the African League against Simba of Tanzania was held in Dar es Salaam on 10/20/2023, and finally the first leg in the round before the final in the same tournament against Sundowns of South Africa, which was held in Pretoria yesterday.

"All of these matches witnessed refereeing errors that had a significant impact direct in its results, which reflects a negative image of African football.

"In its letter, the club ask CAF to take urgent steps to restore matters to its natural quorum, and that the rulers are keen to achieve the principle fairness between competing teams to ensure the success of African competitions."
