CAF 'Urged' To Remove Eto'o From FECAFOOT Presidency

CAF and FIFA have been placed under increasing pressure to remove the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation, Samuel Eto'o, from his position in light of recent controversies.

The 42-year-old former striker has been in the news for the wrong reasons in recent months.

It all started in late 2022, when the west African chief was caught on video kneeing a supporter in the face at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

This was one of the incidents that has led a group of Cameroonian officials to jointly write a letter to FIFA president Gianni Infantino and head of CAF Dr Patrice Motsepe questioning how the Douala native has been able to continue "to illegally impose himself on the FECAFOOT presidency" after a series of public controversies.

Eto'o also received a suspended prison sentence in a tax fraud case, and is currently being investigated by African football's governing body over allegations of match-fixing in his country after leaked audio emerged earlier this year implicating him in the controversy.

As per The Athletic, the letter written by the group, which includes the likes Professional Football League of Cameroon president Pierre Semengue and ex-FECAFOOT vice-president Henry Njalla Quan Junior, laments the fact that no action has been taken against the legendary striker, which "lies at the very heart of football's issues of integrity, ethics and fair play".

They added in the letter: "Not a word has been heard from FIFA despite numerous complaints and reminders from Cameroonian football actors.

"How can FIFA continue to remain silent in the face of so many scandals that compromise public confidence in sporting ethics and the sincerity of matches?

"The sad reality of this two-speed management of almost identical situations is that Africa remains a kind of enclave where you can take liberties with the ethics and exemplarity that sports leaders should embody."
