Setlhodi: Innovations? Chiefs Did It In 1970s

A Kaizer Chiefs legend has reminisced about the good old days when the club was way ahead of everyone else in local football, speaking exclusively to the Siya crew.

During his playing career, Joseph 'Banks' Setlhodi was a goalkeeper and was one of the players who started playing for Kaizer's XI in 1969.

Setlhodi went on to have a great career with Amakhosi, following the club's formation in 1970 and played with some of the great players at the Soweto giants over the years, including the late duo of Johannes 'Ryder' Mofokeng and Gerald 'Umgababa' Dlamini, among others.

"If the supporters of today can see how we used to play, I never used to stand between the posts for too long as a goalkeeper. If you see how the goalkeepers of today play, they play football in the way that we did in the 1970s. I was a sweeper goalkeeper. People think that playing like that started only recently, but we had been doing it all along. We were very much ahead when it came to football at Kaizer Chiefs. I was a sweeper keeper, and you could say I was a general of the team because I did everything. I was talking and issuing instructions and all of that and that's why I ended up being a coach as well," said Setlhodi.

"Unfortunately, people had no televisions back then otherwise they would have seen how we used to play in those days. We had 'Ryder' on the right side and we had 'Umgababa' on the left side and although they were defenders, they were playing like number seven and eleven respectively. When people started talking about wingbacks, I would tell them that it's something that we started long time ago," he said.
