Ex-Coach On What To Expect From Chiefs’ Chivaviro

Ex-Coach On What To Expect From Chiefs’ Chivaviro

Ranga Chivaviro of Kaizer Chiefs is surrounded by Cape Town City defenders during the 2023 MTN8 quarterfinal match between Cape Town City and Kaizer Chiefs at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town on 13 August 2023

Kaizer Chiefs and the supporters can expected bigger things and a successful season from new signing Ranga Chivaviro, according to one of the player's former coaches.

Chivaviro has been working on gelling with the team while searching for his first goal in the new colours before his progress was disrupted by injury in the most recent match – a 1-0 loss against TS Galaxy on the weekend.

So far in the 2023/24 campaign, the former Marumo Gallants striker has featured in all three matches for Amakhosi in the league and one in the MTN8, and Fani Mthethwa who coached him during his time as assistant coach at Baroka FC is confident that the 30-year-old will deliver.

"Ranga is a hardworking player and he knows how to protect the ball. It's just a matter of service and I think there has been a challenge with regards to that. I think most of the teams do not try to play to the strengths of a target man. Being a target man is a different position that requires a certain way of playing from the team," said Mthethwa.

"You must remember that Chiefs used to have a player like Pollen Ndlanya who did well because he played with smart players in the likes of Doctor Khumalo and Thabang Lebese. Those players would know that when Pollen was around the area he would protect the ball, played to the back or side, got into the box and scored," he said.

"It is up to the coaches on how they use Ranga but he is good enough and he will deliver. The boy is strong, hardworking and he knows how to find the target. He just needs to get the supply and he will score. You don't play with a target man and stand far away from him. All the target men were like that, the likes of Pollen, Phil Masinga and others, they needed to have options to be closer to them whether they received the ball on their feet or whether they needed to first chest trap it and they delivered. Their way of playing also benefitted players around them because they also took shots from the balls that came off them," concluded Mthethwa.
