Watenga Waiting On Sundowns Decision

Watenga Waiting On Sundowns Decision

Goalkeeper Ismail Watenga is set to leave Marumo Gallants and is hoping to stay in the topflight next season. Watenga spent the past season with Bahlabane Ba Ntwa, but was unable to get playing minutes ahead of number one choice Washington Arubi in goal.

The 28-year-old made just four appearances in the DStv Premiership and featured once in the Nedbank Cup.

While the net minder did not want to fully get into it when contacted for comment on the sidelines of the club's end-of-season awards ceremony last Sunday, the Siya crew understands that he is still a Mamelodi Sundowns player, and a decision will be made on his future in the coming weeks.

The Ugandan international is unlikely to return to Chloorkop just yet, with so much competition for a starting berth in the goalkeeping department, though he might feel that there is some hope of getting a chance in future since Denis Onyango and Kennedy Mweene are heading towards the end of their careers.

"It was a tough season as an individual. I didn't have as many games as I wished to, but it's part of football. It's my first time being relegated and it's disappointing. It's a bad feeling, but we have to accept it. It's part of football. We have to move on," Watenga told Soccer Laduma.

"Now I am going for the Afcon qualifiers with the national team, but I still want to be in the PSL."

Asked if he is on loan from the Brazilians, Watenga said, "It's somehow like that. But let's not get there."
