Pique Speaks On Messi's Possible Barca Return

Pique Speaks On Messi's Possible Barca Return

With Lionel Messi's Paris Saint-Germain contract set to expire at the end of the season, his former teammate Gerard Pique has spoken out about the Argentine possibly returning to Barcelona.

Two seasons ago, Messi left Barca in acrimonious fashion when the then-club captain was denied the opportunity to extend his deal at the Camp Nou.

His exit was soured as it was alleged that the president of the Blaugrana, Joan Laporta, misled him into believing that he could stay but, in the end, the seven-time Ballon d'Or had to leave and eventually signed with PSG.

Messi's departure from Catalonia not only strained his relationship with Laporta but also with fellow La Masia alumni and long-time teammate Gerard Pique. The former Spain defender is rumoured to have been an advocate for his exit and as a consequence, the connection between the two has since broken down.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup winner has now weighed in on whether the 35-year-old could possibly make a spectacular return to the club where he established himself as one of the beautiful game's all-time greats.

"Only he knows his future," Pique told Diario Sport.

"I think that winning the World Cup was the dream he had on a personal level. It was the title he needed to be considered the best in history. Now everyone is convinced of it.

"Now everything he decides is based on where he thinks he can find happiness. The most normal thing is that he stays in Europe.

"Barca can be there. For the Catalans, for him to return on a sentimental level would be incredible.

"But it is a decision for him. Here, no matter how much people say, those words are only their feelings and their motivation."
