He may not be guaranteed a spot for this weekend's Soweto Derby, but Itumeleng Khune has enough memories to last him a life time in this clash, especially the ones involving the late Senzo Meyiwa.

Years ago, Khune would be considered a sure starter ahead of the derby, but a lot has changed and chances are that Brandon Petersen will get the nod to face rivals Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

As he heads towards the twilight of his playing career, Khune might not get many more opportunities to feature in the derby, but the memories he has created in the clash, are ones he will never forget.

"As we all know, the derby is a must win. For any player who walks onto the pitch, they obviously have friends outside Kaizer Chiefs as a club. So obviously, we will talk. I can take you back to the days of the competition between myself and the late Senzo Meyiwa. We would meet in the national team and we would plan and say, 'let's go give the fans something to smile about, but you must know that we are going to win as Kaizer Chiefs and you are going to concede as Senzo'. He would say the same thing to me, so it has always been a great platform for us as goalkeepers to showcase our talent and obviously to win the game and have the bragging rights," Khune told journalists during a media conference earlier this week.

"It's been a great journey for me, having featured in 27 derbies, but it's more important for the club to win the derby and get the bragging rights. We are going into this game with minds that we are going to win and make it five in a row (against Pirates)."
