An ex-Premier League referee has reportedly been forced to flee an African country amid safety concerns.
Al Ahly Set To Sign Ex-EPL Forward?
According to The Sun, former EPL match official Mark Clattenburg has left Egypt after certain comments made by Zamalek president Mortada Mansour.
Clattenburg was appointed as the head of Egypt's refereeing committee last year after Egyptian referees were strongly criticised by clubs in the Egyptian Premier League last season.
Mansour, who is considered by many to be a controversial figure in the north African nation, reportedly made remarks about Clattenburg's personal life that has led to the ex-EPL referee fearing for his safety in Egypt.
It has been claimed that Zamalek fans have since threatened the 47-year-old, who has now left the country despite his resignation still needing to be confirmed by the Egyptian Football Association.
Last year, Clattenburg stated it was his goal to grow refereeing in the country to the point where officials in Egypt would take games at the FIFA World Cup, insisting he was there for a "long time".
