FIFA To Punish Argentina After World Cup?

FIFA To Punish Argentina After World Cup?

World football governing body FIFA has announced that it is investigating Argentina following the South American country's 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar last month.

The Albiceleste claimed the World Cup title in the Middle East following a thrilling penalty shootout victory over France in the final on 18 December.

Argentina and Les Bleus played to a 3-3 draw after extra-time, with Lionel Messi scoring a brace for the South American nation and Kylian Mbappe netting a hat-trick for Didier Deschamps' side.

Lionel Scaloni's team, however, received criticism following events surrounding the final at the Lusail Stadium, such as goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez's antics during the penalty shootout and after the game.

The shot-stopper appeared to continue his controversial behaviour when Argentina celebrated their famous World Cup win in Buenos Aires, with FIFA now revealing they will investigate potential "offensive behaviour and violations of the principles of fair play".

"The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Argentinian Football Association due to potential breaches of articles 11 (Offensive behaviour and violations of the principles of fair play) and 12 (Misconduct of players and officials) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, as well as of article 44 of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Regulations in conjunction with the Media and Marketing Regulations for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, during the Argentina v. France FIFA World Cup™ final," a statement from FIFA reads.

Argentina won the World Cup despite losing their first match at the tournament – a 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia – becoming only the second nation to do so after Spain in 2010.
