Latest On Mathoho's Situation At Chiefs...

With Kaizer Chiefs defender Eric Mathoho's contract set to expire in June and therefore eligible to sign a pre-contract, Soccer Laduma has the latest on his situation.

Mathoho's game-time has significantly decreased since Arthur Zwane took over permanently at the beginning of the season and he is one of the players whose futures at Chiefs are under review.

According to FIFA rules, with 'Tower''s contract coming to an end when the season concludes, he is free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with a club of his choice.

However, as reported in edition 1306 of the publication, available at your nearest outlet, Mathoho has instructed his camp to wait on Amakhosi before exploring viable options this month.

According to Siya sources in the know, the soon-to-be 33-year old has decided to give the Glamour Boys first preference before making a decision on his future.

Mathoho has only played for a one minute half-way through the season and unless he starts to get involved in the second round of the campaign, from a football perspective, it will be hard to justify the renewal of his contract.

One big hope for Mathoho to remain at Chiefs beyond June 2023 could lie also with the future of Zwane.

'Mangethe' has not had the best of starts in charge at the Glamour Boys, as Soccer Laduma previously reported that the management at the Naturena-based side were not pleased with the side bundled out of the MTN8 by AmaZulu.

The Siya crew reported that the Amakhosi hierarchy subsequently setup processes to review Zwane's reign in charge as the season progresses.

Exactly half-way through the season, Chiefs had fallen 16 points behind table-toppers Mamelodi Sundowns after their narrow defeat against Sekhukhune United on the club's birthday.

It's an open secret that Amakhosi have ambitions of ending a spell of nearly eight years without a trophy and should Zwane be unable to win the Nedbank Cup, his future at the club could also be under serious doubt, which would affect how the club responds to players whose contracts are coming to an end.

On the other hand, Chiefs have been brutal in discarding players in the twilight of their careers after not renewing the contracts of Daniel Cardoso, Lebogang Manyama, Samir Nurkovic and Leonardo Castro among others.

Mathoho is one of the long-serving players at Chiefs after he joined the club in 2012 from the defunct Bloemfontein Celtic.
