Manchester City have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup after losing 2-0 to Southampton on Wednesday night.

Result: Southampton 2-0 Manchester City

Venue: St Mary's Stadium

City manager Pep Guardiola opted to start Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne on the bench as he did against Chelsea in the FA Cup, as Julian Alvarez continued to lead the line.

The Saints carved out the game's first change in the eighth minute when James Ward-Prowse's corner found Duje Caleta-Car, who saw his volley tipped away by Man City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.

While City struggled to carve out chances, Southampton found the breakthrough in the 23rd minute when Sekou Mara brilliantly volleyed home Lyanco's cross from the right flank.

The lead was doubled five minutes later in fine fashion, with Moussa Djenepo catching Ortega off his line from 30 yards out with a lovely lobbed finish.

After a disappointing first half, Guardiola responded with a triple change at the start of the second as Nathan Ake, De Bruyne and Manuel Akanji replaced Sergio Gomez, Kyle Walker and Cole Palmer.

Chances were still few and far between for the Citizens, with Guardiola eventually introducing Haaland for Jack Grealish in the 56th minute.

City nearly pulled one back in the 77rd minute as Ilkay Gündogan's cross was nearly deflected into the back of the net, but goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu was on hand to make the save.

Guardiola's men threw everything forward in search of a goal in the latter stages but the Saints defended well to see out the remaining minutes and booked their spot in the semi-finals.
