Lewandowski Aims Sly Dig At Ballon d'Or Award

Robert Lewandowski

While Robert Lewandowski has admitted that Karim Benzema is likely to win the 2022 Ballon d'Or, the Barcelona star seems to still be holding a grudge against organisers France Football as he fired a subtle shot at the award this week.

Pep Reveals 1 Team Standing In His Way Of UCL Success

The Ballon d'Or is arguably the highest and most important individual honour that can be bestowed on an individual footballer.

For the past 14 years, the award has been almost exclusively the property of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, making it all the more commendable when their rivals are in serious contention for the accolade.

Lewandowski looked all but set to win the illustrious Golden Ball in 2020, but the award was ultimately cancelled that year due to COVID-19 and all the delays that the pandemic caused.

With the 2022 edition of the prize set to take place on Monday, the Polish hitman has made his frustrations known while also speaking on the likelihood of Benzema scooping the award.

"He's [Benzema] probably one of the favourites to win the Ballon d'Or, of course if they don't cancel it, then probably he's going to win this Ballon d'Or, yeah," the Poland captain told Movistar Plus.

Messi Causes Stir After Barca's Draw With Inter

Lewandowski was all but certain to win the award prior to its cancellation in 2020 after finding the back of the net 55 times and providing a further 10 assists for Bayern Munich as they won only their second treble ever, capturing the UEFA Champions League, the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal titles.

He was, however, able to console himself for missing out on the Ballon d'Or by collecting FIFA's The Best Men's Player award and UEFA's Player of the Year prize that year.
