Downs Coach Shocked: This Is Very Rare!

POLOKWANE, SOUTH AFRICA - AUGUST 20: Manqoba Mngqithi Head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns during the DStv Premiership match between Sekhukhune United and Mamelodi Sundowns at Peter Mokaba Stadium on August 20, 2022 in Polokwane, South Africa. (Photo by Philip Maeta/Gallo Images)

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has aired his disappointment for an unwanted statistic his side accumulated in their MTN8 semi-final match against Orlando Pirates.

It's not very often that Sundowns are involved in a goalless draw.

What is even more rare for the Brazilians is going through a match without registering a shot on target, something that they managed against Pirates on Saturday afternoon.

The star-studded Sundowns squad managed a total of zero shots on target all game.

It is understandable then that Mngqithi was left frustrated by his side's lack of potency on the day, revealing his displeasure with the unwanted statistic.

"It's very rare. I don't want to lie. That is why I say this was a game of small margins because if you look at the first chance by Ronwen [Williams] to Peter [Shalulile] leaving that ball just to go through and face the goalkeeper, it's a clear chance to take a shot and score. The same happened with [Khuliso] Mudau, two moments on the opposite side with no one next to him but balloons both crosses over the bar," he told the media after the match.

"It's a very rare scenario for us not to have shots on targets when we created so many moments that should have resulted in a shot at goal. Peter, second half, had two moments, which I think were moments that needed a bit of composure just to receive and put your body in front of the defender and terminate the attack but very, very unfortunate for us not to have created those moments," he said.
