'In SA We've Got Agents, Overseas Players Have Managers'

Masibusane Zongo during the Absa Premiership match between SuperSport United and Platinum Stars at the Super Stadium in Atteridgeville, South Africa.

Amidst the drinking problem of South African footballers, Masibusane Zongo has suggested what causes all the frustrations.

The party lifestyle and drinking culture has become common for South African footballers.

After sharing a story of how being neglected by his then coach Gavin Hunt, led to him resorting to the bottle, Zongo has expanded that the loneliness and depression of footballers also stem from player agents, who generally only care about them when they are only playing and in the limelight.

"In South Africa we've got agents, overseas (players) have managers. In South Africa agents only care about you when you're playing. When you're playing, they'll do anything for you. (But) get an injury or start not to play, yoh! Suddenly you speak to their PAs (personal assistants)," Zongo revealed his agony in an interview on Trap and Pass YouTube Channel.

"As an agent, it now seems like I work for you, when it's the other way around, they work for us. That's why we've got so many players not doing anything (When clubless or retired), it's because they are not in the limelight anymore.

"Managers (of players) overseas, even if you don't have a team, they'll find a place for you to train, get you a personal trainer, they put money for you aside (when playing, in case of hard times)," Zongo added.

South African football have had a number of talented players who have their struggled with alcohol and drug abuse.

It appears that many players are unable to get immediate help and urgent focus when they are having mental issues and often find themselves with no one to run to.
