At the beginning of the 2015/16 season, no football supporter would have thought a team that fought relegation would come around and clinch the English Premier League title. History has been made by Leicester City, who leaped over so-called "big" teams such as Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City, and opened many eyes to the fact that the ball is indeed round.
The Foxes joined the EPL after winning the Championship in the 2013/14 season. They had been away from the top flight for more than a decade. Their first season was dismal. seeing them plunge to the bottom of the log. An amazing turn of fortune saw them finish that campaign in 14th place, making them only the third team in history to survive after being at the bottom of the log at Christmas. Seems like Leicester are famous for making history!
At the beginning of the 2015/16 season, the club brought in a new manager, Claudio Ranieri, and made an exceptional start to the campaign, with their striker Jamie Vardy firing shots in all around. The team topped the EPL table on 19 December, having been rock bottom exactly 12 months earlier. The turnaround was definitely a surprise, and everyone in football circles began to notice that City were becoming the team to beat.
Today, Leicester City are the champions and have attracted global attention. Not too shabby for a team that was given the odds of 5000/1 to win the title.
This is an indication that there are no "small" teams in any league; it's 11 players versus 11 players on the field, and anything can happen. The Foxes have sent out a warning: Never underestimate your opponents!
Well done to the underdogs.
