National team coach Shakes Mashaba recently announced his latest squad to take on Gambia in a 2017 Afcon qualifier. His selections have, in the past, been generally been mired in controversy, and it is no different this time.
The biggest bone of contention with the latest squad appears to be the inclusion of inconsistent Orlando Pirates striker Thamsanqa Gabuza. He has not been a regular starter forr his club, yet has received consistent selection ahead of, for example, Ajax Cape Town's Prince Nxumalo, who has scored 13 goals this season (compared to Gabuza, who has scored just three).
Also to keep in the back of one's mind is the constant exclusion of Kermit Erasmus, the star striker who previously played for Orlando Pirates and now plaies his trade in France's Ligue 1.
Here arre some supporters' comment about the latest Bafana squad:
"Is madala still angry with Erasmus?" – axepatosi
"Gabuza? At least (Thabiso) Kutumela would have been better." – wrongturn
"Mashaba must be on drugs. Gabuza might be from my mighty Bucs but does not deserve to be there. Nxumalo has 13 goals but is not there." – mzukwa30
"The less said about Gabuza, the better. It's like his name is written in iron in Shakes' mind and cannot be erased." – tee’buc
Shakes stands firm behind his selections and is expected to walk over Gambia, so he probably will be able to justify his selections with the result. But still, many are wondering why our highest scoring strikers and our most promising youngsters and best overseas stars are not being selected…
What do you make of Mashaba’s recent selections…
