Supporters flock to the stadiums in the hope of seeing something out of the ordinary from their favourite football players – that is the culture of the South African game. That's not to say that goals or results are less important, but the entertainment factor is what fans of Soth Africa's top division hold in high esteem.
The modern PSL era has seen an influx of European coaches integrating their style of management into the local game. In turn, we have seen an element of South African football drift away. "Kasi Flavour" or "Diski Style" appears to only make a cameo every now and then, when, perhaps 10 years ago, it was all South African footballers played for.
Before the start of the Soweto Derby this past weekend, legends Doctor Khumalo and Tebza Moloi spoke about the very same issue. Doc, on the one hand, mentioned that, in their days, they played for the spectators and did it freely, with no shackles on their feet.
Moloi made the point that they looked up to players such as Jomo Sono and Ace Ntsoelengoe. He also mentioned that today's players look up to modern legends such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who do things differently.
With things like science and tactics more prevalent in our local game, do you Kasi Flavour is still important to have?
