A French star is reportedly inching ever closer to switching his international allegiance from Europe to Africa.
According to La Gazette Du Fennec, Olympique Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar is in the process of changing his national team from the 2018 FIFA World Cup winners to Algeria.
The Lyon-born midfielder has made only one appearance for the France national team to date, a 7-1 drubbing of Ukraine in a friendly in which he was responsible for assisting both the third and fourth goals.
It seems the 23-year-old has fallen out of favour with Didier Deschamps since, though, because the French coach has refused to utilise the playmaker since that fateful night at the Stade de France in 2020.
Now, it looks as though Aouar could be playing his international football for the Desert Foxes in the near future, with the Lyon man rumoured to have been in the Algerian city of Ain Temouchent recently.
Aouar almost committed his international future to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations champions in 2020, but opted against it when Deschamps called him up for the first time in August 2020.
He was unable to compete in those set of fixtures for Les Bleus because he had contracted the coronavirus, but would get called up again to make his first and only appearance for the reigning world champions in that friendly against Ukraine.
The Frenchman's rumoured visit to the North African country has everything to do with wanting to play for Algeria, according to La Gazette Du Fennec.
It is said that Aouar has already begun the administrative formalities to become eligible for selection for the Desert Foxes, and once those have been finalised, it will then be up to head coach Djamel Belmadi, should he decide to call the midfielder up, when it would be best to integrate the player into the Algeria squad.
