Virgil Van Dijk Reacts To His Costly Mistake

Virgil van Dijk makes error that leads to goal

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, who is known for being incredibly composed and reliable, has reacted to his costly error that allowed Arsenal back into the game in the Reds' 2-1 loss on Wednesday night.

The Premier League champions dominated Mikel Arteta's side for most of the match, but two mistakes saw the London club take a surprise lead in the first half, which they held on to until the end of the 90 minutes.

Van Dijk was responsible for Alexandre Lacazette's equaliser in the 32nd minute, which came just 12 minutes after Sadio Mane had put Liverpool ahead. The Dutchman was arguably too relaxed in possession as he was put under pressure, and saw his attempted back-pass intercepted by the French striker.

Lacazette rounded Alisson before finding the back of the net, and was again involved in Arsenal's second strike just before half-time after he cut off the Reds goalkeeper's pass to left-back Andrew Robertson before finding Reiss Nelson in the box.

Speaking after the match, Van Dijk took full blame for his side's collapse, and insisted Liverpool will try to win their last two league matches of the season.

"Obviously, the goals we gave them were a present," he said, according to The National.

"Until the first goal, it was totally us and we were dominant. But if you give goals like that away, including myself, you get what you deserve.

"Goals like that shouldn't happen and it happened twice tonight. Until I make the mistake, we did nothing wrong. I take the blame for it, of course, I take it as a man, and we move on.

"We wanted to win the game and we can't blame it on the fact that we are already champions. We will try to win the last two games and then get a well-deserved break. We have had a fantastic season."
