It's Arguably The Biggest South African Move Of This Window...

Thembi Kgatlana

It's arguably the most exciting move in South African football this transfer window, but what made SL Benfica make a move for one of Mzansi's most prized assets?

Thembi Kgatlana completed a move to Benfica this week as she penned a long-term contract with the Portuguese giants in an attempt to elevate her career to the next level following a spell with Beijing BG Phoenix in China.

The 23-year-old Banyana Banyana star has now got underway at her new club in Lisbon as she takes aim at a European debut against SC Braga this weekend, with the attacker in full training ahead of their Taça da Liga Feminina clash on February 1.

Speaking to Benfica TV about her move, Kgatlana said, "I'm very excited to sign with Benfica… Thank you to the team, to the president, and everyone involved for giving me the opportunity to come to Portugal and to be able to come play with Benfica.

"Benfica is a great club in Portugal and in the whole world, I know their records, so for me to get into such a big club is an honour for me and my career."

Meanwhile, the club's vice president, Fernando Tavares, explained that they have lofty hopes for their latest signing, pointing out why they brought her on board.

Tavares added, "We have high expectations for Thembi… She was considered the best African of the Year in 2019, and is a player with very strong characteristics. She is very fast and can perform two positions on the field - as a striker or as a winger. With this signing we will add other solutions to Benfica's offensive line with respect to our season goals."

Benfica are currently top of the Campeonato Nacional Feminino as they look to clinch the league title and qualify for next year's UEFA Women's Champions League.
