Koulibaly Reveals Reason Behind Struggles At Chelsea

Kalidou Koulibaly

Kalidou Koulibaly has explained the reason for his stuttering start to life as a Chelsea player following his big-money move from Napoli during the off-season.

Inter Milan Star Set For San Siro Exit?

The Blues let go of a few defenders in the latest transfer window, with the outgoings being balanced out by quality reinforcements that were brought in.

Before the signings of Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella, Chelsea brought 2021 Africa Cup of Nations-winning captain Koulibaly to the club, and while he arrived at Stamford Bridge with a massive reputation, the French-born central defender has arguably failed to live up to expectations.

Prior to Wednesday night's 3-0 victory over AC Milan, Koulibaly had been part of a Chelsea defence that had kept only one clean sheet in all competitions the entire season, and was also sent off during a league match against Leeds United.

Reflecting on the start he's made in west London so far, the Senegalese has attributed a lack of minutes to his struggles.

"I am a player who needs to play regularly, everyone knows that. It is also true that I needed a period of adaptation, I am doing it well, I'm not perfect yet or what I want to be, but I'm getting there," the ex-Genk man told Sky Sports Italia.

The ex-Napoli captain also said he does not regret making the move to the English capital, despite the excellent start to the season his former team is having both in Italy and in Europe.

"Napoli? They are playing very well," Koulibaly added.

"I'm really happy for them. I talked to some players and the coach. They are doing a great championship. and a great Champions [League].

"Did I expect it? Honestly, no.

"I have seen players who have grown up, they no longer need me and this makes me happy

"I hope they will continue for a long time. For the championship I do not say anything because I know that in Naples we are superstitious."

'We Quickly Dismissed The Idea Of Signing Ronaldo'

Following Fofana's recent injury, the 31-year-old will likely return to Premier League action this weekend when Graham Potter's men take on Wolverhampton Wanderers.
