'Downs Avoiding Signing Too Many Expensive Players'

Despite signing experienced attacking players, Mamelodi Sundowns remain committed to promoting talent from their DDC team, the Siya crew has been informed.

Insiders at the club have indicated that the Brazilians are set to move young striker Thulani Zandamela from their DDC side to their senior team as soon as possible.

The sources added that the 22-year-old was recalled from his loan spell at Motsepe Foundation Championship side University of Pretoria at the start of the current season with the intention of promoting him to their senior setup.

"I think by now he could have been playing for the senior team but the changing of the technical team has also affected him. But it seems even the current technical team, helped by the Sporting Director and management have noted that he is set for promotion now. He was recalled from loan at University of Pretoria at the start of the season because he was set for promotion and we feel now is believed to be the right time for the club to promote him," the Siya source stated.

A second insider close to the club stated that Sundowns aim to promote as many young players as possible to reduce expenditure and leverage their investment in development teams.

"You see the club has many players in the development structures and they believe it's not of use to have good development structures and then don't make use of those players. That's why you have seen the likes of Mali Khoza (Malibongwe), Siyabonga Mabena, Kutlwano Letlhaku and now they are set to promote Thulani (Zandamela). They are avoiding just signing too many expensive players who cost a lot of money while they have great players in development. So, going forward you will see a team which is full of players from their development sides whether the DDC, Under-19 or even the Under-15s as they have good players in all those age groups, and for now, it's Thulani Zandamela who is in line for promotion," the second source told Soccer Laduma.

Zandamela, who spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Tuks, is seen as a promising future striker not only for Sundowns but also for South Africa. Soccer Laduma contacted Sundowns for comment but the club had not responded by the time this report was published.
