But who has the upper hand? Which team has scored the most goals? Who is the top Soweto Derby goalscorer? Find out that and more as we look at some of the stats surrounding the history of South Africa's biggest game.

Which Team Has Historic Bragging Rights?

Of the 161 games that have been played between the two sides competitively, it's Kaizer Chiefs that lead the way – substantially. They've won 67 matches to Pirates' 38, and also scored exactly 40 more goals than their rivals (209/169).

Who Got The Ball Rolling?

Percy 'Chippa' Moloi, the father of Teboho Moloi, scored the very first goal in a Chiefs vs Pirates derby game in 1970, on January 24. Pirates won 6-4.

Which Player Has The Most Derby Goals?

Amakhosi legend, Ace Ntsoelengoe, holds that distinction having scored 19 in derbies during his time with the club. In comparison, Pirates' top scorer is Jomo Sono, with nine goals over the years.

Double Jeopardy: Who's Scored For Both Sides?

Despite the numerous amount of players crossing the floor and playing for both teams, only six have scored on both sides in the derby. They are Gabriel Khoza, Blessing Mgidi, Jerry Sadike, Donald 'Ace' Khuse, Marks Maponyane and Marc Batchelor.

The Drawby?

In total, 51 of the 161 games have ended as draws, but 13 of them have come in the 25 games since the start of 2010.

Off The Mark: Who Scored The Quickest Goal?

The fastest goal in Soweto Derby came after just 19 seconds when Mabhudi Khenyeza came out of the blocks quickly for Chiefs in Durban back in November 2007.

Winless Streak

Chiefs current run of seven games without an outright victory is the longest of games without a win in 90 minutes since the Soweto Derby began.

Most Games In A Year?

Way back in 1975 the teams met on a whopping seven occasions. Incredibly there were 34 goals scored in those seven games.

Highest Scoring Game Ever?

On two occasions there have been 10 goals scored in a Soweto Derby. The first was in the first ever clash in 1970 when Pirates won 6-4, but Chiefs got revenge with a 7-3 win two years later in 1972.

Match Abandoned

Five times, between 1974 and 2001, the game had to be abandoned before it was concluded.

Last Hat-trick?

We've been waiting a while for a Soweto Derby hat-trick… Jerry Sikhosana, who got three in Pirates' 4-1 win in November 1996, was the last person to do so.

Goalscoring Shot-Stopper?

Chiefs' legendary goalkeeper, Joseph 'Banks' Setlhodi, is the only keeper to score in the derby… He grabbed four from the penalty spot in 1971 and 1972.
