Following the recent launch of a book on the legendary late 'Kalamazoo', Mokone's family are now looking at the idea of having a road named after the man, who made history by becoming the first black professional to ply his trade in an European league, namely in Holland.
Piggybacking on the publication of 'Kalamazoo Remembered', which saw famous ex-pro Lucas 'Masterpieces' Moripe and others attending the ceremony at a church in Atteridgeville, the Mokones say they believe South Africans could do more to honour the legend.
"There's a Steve Mokone street in Holland, but we can't let them do it all," said a family member. "Here he's a national treasure, so indeed if the nation wants to do something big for him, so be it. But I feel whatever the country is trying to do for him, Atteridgeville comes first because Kalamazoo originally made his mark at the Mbolekwa Stadium."
The City of Tshwane has in the past honoured a number of well-known footballers, including the late goalkeeper legend, Trevor Gething, with a long street in Faerie Glen. This has given Kalamazoo's relatives a boost.
"That's ammunition as to why I want to see them doing it," he went on to say. "At the launch, the mayor's office bought in the idea of us naming a street after Steve, so that's our next objective."
Tshepo Rakhahla, the City's Director of Sports, who acknowledged the importance of Mokone being remembered, referred Soccer Laduma to his Mayor's PR Department, however, their telephone rang unanswered.
