Steve Mokone Has Passed On

Steve Mokone Has Passed On
Steve "Kalamazoo" Mokone, who was battling poor health in a US hospital, has passed away just four days before his 83rd birthday.   Mokone first made an impression during the 1950s while on the books of the now defunct Durban Bush Bucks, before utilising his great dribbling skills in Holland for Heracles FC.    That's where the talented right winger starred together with fellow compatriots, Herbert Zuma and Darius Dhlomo, while he also represented a couple of lower league outfits in England.   A family member confirmed his death to Soccer Laduma. "Just after the arrival of his son Ronnie, Steve died," a source said. "His ashes will now be returned to SA."   The first black professional in Holland has a street named after him in that country. A book entitled De Zwarte Meteoor (The Black Meteor) was also written about his life.    In fact, it generated so much interest that a film followed.   Soccer Laduma would like to send its sincere condolences to the Mokone family.
