Robyn Johannes Retires From Professional Football

Experienced defender Robyn Johannes has made a big decision regarding his football career, after 18 years in the professional ranks.

For the past three years, Johannes has been playing for Stellenbosch FC in the Western Cape and has been one of the influential players for the side.

The 35-year-old centre-back, who has previously also played for Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates in his career, parted ways with Stellies at the end of the 2021/22 season when his contract expired.

The veteran has confirmed to the Siya crew that he has made the decision to retire from professional football.

"After almost two decades in the Beautiful Game, I have decided to retire from professional football," confirmed Johannes.

"I made my professional debut in 2004, as an 18-year-old, and played for several fantastic teams over the years. However, I feel now is the time to move on to the next phase of my life.

"I would particularly like to thank the management, staff and players of the following clubs who all gave me opportunities in my career and contributed towards my development both as a player and as a person in a variety of ways. I am extremely grateful for all that I learnt from you and for the highs and lows we shared along the way," he confirmed.  

"I was also fortunate to play for the senior national team, Bafana Bafana, as well as captaining both the Under 20 and Under 23 teams.

"My gratitude is also extended to the fans as I have been blessed with so much love and support throughout my career and I will always have a special place in my heart for you all.

"To Glyn Binkin, my manager, thank you for being with me every step of the way and for your continuous guidance and support throughout my career. I look forward to many more. 

"I am also very grateful that, over the past few years, I have been able to play close to home in Cape Town and end my career with the support of my beautiful wife, darling child, as well as close family, my father, mother, brother and friends who have all sacrificed so much in allowing me to follow my dreams as a professional footballer. To them, I thank you!!!

"I am proud of all that I have achieved in my career, and I am now looking forward to the next chapter of my life, where football development will be a key area of focus for me. Thank you all, once again. See you soon.
