After the weekend busy PSL fixture list, including a 1-1 draw in the Soweto Derby, the PSL table sees Kaizer Chiefs in the seventh position with Mamelodi Sundowns in second place, three points behind Bidvest Wits.
However, with the discrepancy in games played across the league with half of the teams having played 20 games, five teams played 19 games, two teams played 18 games, and Sundowns on just 17 games played, the current PSL log does not tell the full story.
To gain more clarity on the title race, the relegation battle, and the charge for a top eight finish, we look at the Points per Game league table:
Team | Games | Points | Points Per Game | Projected Points |
Mamelodi Sundowns | 17 | 34 | 2.00 | 60 |
Bidvest Wits | 20 | 37 | 1.85 | 56 |
Orlando Pirates | 19 | 33 | 1.74 | 52 |
Cape Town City | 19 | 30 | 1.58 | 47 |
SuperSport United | 19 | 29 | 1.53 | 46 |
Polokwane City | 18 | 27 | 1.50 | 45 |
Bloemfontein Celtic | 20 | 29 | 1.45 | 44 |
AmaZulu* | 20 | 29 | 1.45 | 44 |
Kaizer Chiefs | 20 | 28 | 1.40 | 42 |
Highlands Park | 20 | 25 | 1.25 | 38 |
Golden Arrows | 20 | 24 | 1.20 | 36 |
AmaZulu | 20 | 23 | 1.15 | 35 |
Black Leopards | 19 | 20 | 1.05 | 32 |
Chippa United | 20 | 19 | 0.95 | 29 |
Baroka | 20 | 18 | 0.90 | 27 |
Free State Stars | 19 | 16 | 0.84 | 25 |
Maritzburg United | 20 | 14 | 0.70 | 21 |
*AmaZulu docked six points
Looking at this alternative table, it shows that Sundowns are averaging a league-high 2.0 points per game from their 17 matches. Although points in the bag are sometimes more valuable than games in hand, Pitso Mosimane's side is on course for a 60-point season. If they maintain their current rate, Pirates would need 28 points from their final 11 matches to get to 61 points – meaning potentially needing nine wins and one draw from their remaining matches.
Kaizer Chiefs currently sit in ninth position with a paltry 1.40 points per match. As it stands, they are heading for a 48-point season, six less than in the last campaign.
AmaZulu have picked up 29 points from their 20 matches – more than Chiefs – but were docked six points. This shows the excellent season that Usuthu is having despite this disciplinary action. Despite going under the radar, Kaitano Tembo has guided SuperSport United to a solid season. If they can continue to accrue points at this rate, they would end up with 46 for the campaign – seven more than last season.
In the relegation battle, Maritzburg United are only going to gather 21 points at their current rate and will need a very strong run of form to avoid the dreaded drop.
