News reaching the Siya crew is that the Professional Footballers Association of South Africa will be officially launched on Thursday.
The newly-formed organisation is set to act as a union to safeguard the interests of professional footballers in the country, much like the South African Football Players Union which has been in existence for a number of years in the local game. It has been revealed that PFASA will hold a press conference to announce their arrival in South African football, on Thursday at 10h00.
In addition, the media briefing will be addressed by Cappy Matutoane, Mamelodi Sundowns star Lebohang Mokoena and former Silver Stars and Orlando Pirates midfielder Daniel 'Sailor' Tshabalala.
According to the association, the launch will be held in Braamfontein, Jo'burg. Matutoane left SAFPU in December last year, having been the national organiser there. He was served with a suspension order in November as part of due process for a disciplinary hearing, but resigned before being hauled before the coals.
Matutoane was allegedly to be suspended for what the organisation said was "colluding with team owners to the detriment of football players". "We suspended Matutoane because he colluded with the owners of Roses United who upon seeking to sell the status of the team, tried to rob the players who were contracted to the team their benefits," said SAFPU at the time.
In a statement that followed, Matutoane revealed, "I won't be lost to football as I will still be representing players in my own personal capacity in the disputes they might have with the clubs, the thing that I have done with distinction for years."
