Nebank Cup Last 32 Report: Santos 2-1 Gamalakhe United

Nedbank Cup Last 32

Full Time: Santos 2-1 Gamalakhe United

Date: 26 February 2014

Venue: Athlone Stadium

Santos came from a goal behind to beat Gamalakhe United 2-1 in a Nedbank Cup Last 32 match at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night.

The opening 45 minutes was a highly entertaining affair as the action flowed from end to end, with both sides having their fair share of shots on goal.

Santos started the better of the two teams and controlled the early possession stakes, but it wasn't long till the second division side found their footing.

In fact, it was Gamalakhe that had the first real opportunity in front of goal in the ninth minute when Mkhize broke through on goal, but failed to beat Pa Dembo Touray in a one-on-one situation, the keeper making a good stop.

Four minutes later and Santos had their first opening as Edwin Sitayitayi met a cross from Suhayl Allie, but he fired narrowly wide at the near post.

In the 18th minute Sitayitayi was at it again when he met a cross with a strong header, but his effort was brilliantly saved by Khuzwayo.

Gamalakhe then opened the scoring five minutes later when a superb passing movement from the visitors saw them pierce the Santos defence and concluded with Sakhile Kubheka slotting the ball home, 1-0.

After going behind Santos threw men forward as they applied pressure on the Gamalakhe goal.

In the 29th minute Santos were unlucky not to draw level when Gregory Roelf saw a header cleared off the goalline by Hlatshwayo.

Finally, in the 40th minute Santos did find the equaliser when Roelf headed home a pin-point corner from Allie, 1-1.

The People's Team then went in front seconds before the break, a little fortuitously, as Nkonzo turned the ball into his own net after attempting to clear an Allied cross.

The second half saw Santos take control of the game, but for all their dominance they struggled to break down a stubborn Gamalakhe defence.

In the 58th minute Fagrie Lakay let fly from distance, but his effort went narrowly wide of the target.

Eight minutes later Sitayitayi met a cross from Allie, but his header skimmed the wrong side of the post.

In the 76th minute Santos Zaakir Williams met a cross from Santos debutant Rabebe, but he flashed his effort wide of the target as well.

Santos continued to control possession after that, but failed to add to the scoreline as the People's Team dumped Gamalakhe out of the Nedbank Cup
