Mamelodi Sundowns legend Lovers Mohlala says South African football needs to be run properly in order for Shakes Mashaba to succeed as the national team coach.
Mashaba was recently appointed as the Bafana Bafana coach, replacing outgoing Gordon Igesund, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the month. Most have welcomed the appointment of Mashaba, who comes in for his second permanent stint with the national side, and Mohlala has joined the bandwagon.
However, he is quick to point out that changing coaches is not the solution, but rather making sure the structures at grassroots level are in order.
"I am glad that Shakes has been appointed as the national coach, but at the same I'm sad because Gordon Igesund was fired because of politics. You can't blame the coaches because football in South Africa is run by politicians. We have 62 Safa regions with 16 teams each, but we do not have the proper structures – the ABC Motsepe League is in shambles," he told the Siya crew.
"I know of a certain team in the lower ranks that is bribing keepers. The main thing is that football must be run by footballers here. Aaron Motsoaledi is a doctor and he's the Minister of Health. Sadly, that's not the case in our football and, unless we deal with these issues, we're not going anywhere," concluded Mohlala.
