Amakhosi claimed their first win of this season's Absa Premiership last night, September 13, with a 2-0 win over City the Cape Town Stadium.
Speaking to the media at the post-match conference, Komphela admitted that he changed his style of play for the encounter and rather than playing the normal 'Chiefs attacking football', he opted to give the initiative to City on the night.
"There (are) two ways in football, whether you give the initiative or you take it. We opted to give the initiative for obvious reasons. Because if you take the initiative, you are too expansive, you are creating too big distances for the players and your wing-backs will have to keep bombing forward. The amount of kilometers they clock is going to go higher," Komphela told the media.
"You need to handle a lot if you are playing to honest a game, we needed to be smart today and I thought your observation, to make a clear reference to what we did tonight, what you are saying is true, but it still paid (off)."
"We didn't only sit there like most of our colleagues would say, 'park the bus', we came out nicely and we played, maybe you would have expected Chiefs to be more dictating, be more on the ball and all that, but when you are more on the ball, you look at the results. Look at Bidvest, Arrows, the ones who have lesser possessions seem to be more hurting so it is an initiative. You take it or you give it," he added.
