How Chiefs Can Avoid Another Heavy Downs Defeat

How Chiefs Can Avoid Another Heavy Downs Defeat

Kaizer Chiefs have suffered some heavy defeats to Mamelodi Sundowns in recent seasons and a former player has given his advice on how Amakhosi can avoid humiliation against the Tshwane giants.

Amakhosi have already lost twice to Sundowns this season, but the heavy defeat came in the Carling Knockout. Sundowns cruised to a 4-0 victory at FNB Stadium, booting them out of the competition in a ruthless manner. Last season, at the same venue, Sundowns hammered Chiefs 5-1 as they completed the double over the Soweto giants.

So, with their Betway Premiership clash coming up this weekend at Lucas Moripe Stadium, how do Chiefs go about avoiding another heavy defeat?

Former Amakhosi defender Mokete Tsotetsi, who would know what it takes to come up against players that are tricky and lethal, has given advice to the Soweto giants ahead of the meeting on Saturday.

Sundowns have scored 42 goals in 18 matches, an incredible record in front of goal considering they netted 52 goals in 30 matches last term. With a record like this, Chiefs need to ensure they are in fine form at the back to stop what could potentially be a massacre.

"This is a tricky one. If you check some of the last few games, Chiefs have not been doing much. Now they are facing Sundowns and they have built some momentum after losing to TS Galaxy a few weeks ago. So, this is going to be a challenging one for Chiefs, who are still building under the coach (Nasreddine Nabi)," Mokete Tsotetsi said to the Siya crew.

"Chiefs' game plan on the day will be important. They would not want to lose by a big score again, so it will be important to apply themselves, especially in defence. They should deny Sundowns space and time on the ball. We all know that when Sundowns has time and space on the ball, they are dangerous because they understand each other. There are a lot of movements that make it difficult for teams to contain Sundowns. If Chiefs can do that, then they have a chance to win this one or take one point away from them."

Chiefs were last hammered 4-1 by SuperSport United in their last match and have had extra time to work on their problems due to the fact that their clash against Royal AM this past weekend was postponed.
