Chiefs Could Still Sign Webber Despite MLS Interest

Chiefs Could Still Sign Webber Despite MLS Interest

Insiders have disclosed that the club is hesitant to sanction a move to America, because of the experiences of players like Njabulo Blom and Cassius Mailula who didn't receive as much game time as they would have hoped.

"At the moment it doesn't look positive for Jamie to move to America. Yes, there is interest from there but Sekhukhune United feel that he still has the chance of playing top PSL football or to even move to Europe rather than go to America. They believe that apparently they have seen how some South African players have faired in the MLS and they don't want to let him go and face the same challenges there," said the Siya source.

"This then gives Kaizer Chiefs the chance to pursue his services. You know they were interested in him when he was at SuperSport United before he joined Sekhukhune United? And now they are still looking at him so if he doesn't move to MLS or Europe then Chiefs stand a better chance of signing him this time around," the source added.

A second source stated that Webber remains contracted to Sekhukhune United and the club holds the reins on his transfer negotiations.

"He is a Sekhukhune United player. He signed a three-year deal when he joined the team in 2023 which only expires in June 2026. So for any team to sign him they have to buy him from Sekhukhune United. So, they are in control of the transfer of the player. So if they feel a local move or a European move is better than the MLS then you may find that's what will happen at the end of the day," the second source stated.

The 27-year-old was a consistent performer for Babina Noko last season but hasn't been a regular in this campaign. Soccer Laduma contacted Sekhukhune United for comment, but there was no response at the time of publication.
