In reminiscing about some of the best moments of his professional career, a former Bafana Bafana striker has revealed how much he was paid for winning the Golden Boot back in the day.
During his successful career in Mzansi's topflight, George Dearnaley was a bulky top striker for AmaZulu in the 1990s, who caused havoc for defenders with his strength and ability with the ball both on the ground and in the air.

Having also turned out for Hellenic and Seven Stars respectively in the latter stages of his career, the Cape Town-born forward had also represented the South African senior national team in his heyday.
Following his debut for AmaZulu in 1990 against Fairway Stars at Kings Park Stadium – a match in which he scored – Dearnaley went on to become the NSL Golden Boot winner in 1992 with 20 league goals, an accolade he shared with another ex-Bafana striker in Mark Williams who was with Hellenic at the time.

The Prize money for the top goal scorer at the time was R7 500, and for their efforts Dearnaley and Williams received R3 750 each.
"28 years ago we thought we were rich! Wonder what 20 league goals is worth today?"
Dearnaley jokingly said in sharing the information with his social media followers.
Dearnaley shared a document which was sent from the NSL to AmaZulu confirming the prize money, and it reads as follows:
Your player George Dearnaley was selected as joint Richleigh Shoes Top Goal Scorer for 1992 with Mark Williams of Hellenic. The prize money of R7 500 will be split between the two players to receive R3 750 each. The presentation will be held in the Media Lounge, FNB Stadium at 11h00 on Tuesday 8th June, 1993. Please arrange for the player or his representative to be present.

As things stand, the PSL Golden Boot minimum prize money is R25 000 for 15 goals or less, and the amount increases by R25 000 for every additional five goals scored.
