In discussing the return of PSL football, a former crowd-puller has spoken about the influence of the fans in the game.
Since the resumption of the 2019/20 season, all the teams will be playing without the fans at the stadium – something that has never been seen before in local football, in line with the rules in the country to curb the spread of the COVID-19.
Following the match for Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates on Tuesday, as well as Kaizer Chiefs and Bidvest Wits on Wednesday without the supporters, ex-Amakhosi midfielder Junior Khanye says that the influence of fans in the game has become more evident.
"It has become clearer now that these big clubs rely on fans for them to play well. I understand that clubs have been inactive for five months but the standard isn't the same without the fans. Fans play a big role in the success of clubs and how the players perform, especially for Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns," said Khanye.
"Without fans in football some players won't be the same. I have seen so many so-called top players who did very well when they played for big clubs with huge crowds but struggled when they played for teams with not many fans," he said.
