Chiefs Reignite Interest In SA Striker?

Chiefs Reignite Interest In SA Striker?

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - APRIL 10: Nasreddine Nabi (Kaizer Chiefs Coach) during the Nedbank Cup semi final Gauteng press conference at Nedbank Head Quarters on April 10, 2025

As Kaizer Chiefs continue their search for a reliable striker, the club is understood to have revived interest in a South African forward.

Soccer Laduma has already linked Amakhosi to a number of potential striker signings, with the understanding that the club is looking to bring in more than one goalscorer.

Now, Siya sources close to Chiefs have indicated that the player they are looking at once again is Fagrie Lakay.

Amakhosi had previously been linked to the striker for the past two seasons and are now believed to be reconsidering him as a target for next season.

The insiders added that Chiefs are looking at alternative options with their prime target still being Fiston Mayele.

"At the moment there is not one striker who the club could say is the one joining them. Yes, they are priotising Fiston Mayele but they don't want to be caught off guard if things don't work out with him and that's why they are reigniting the interest in Lakay. You remember they have been interested in him for some time now? They are just waiting for that chance to sign him. And this could be the right time to do so for the club," the Siya source stated.

A second insider pointed out how Chiefs face the challenge of negotiating with Pyramids FC since both Lakay and Mayele are under contract with the Egyptian club. It could come down to priorities for both clubs.

"It could go down to choice and priority for both Chiefs and Pyramids. Which striker could Pyramids let go and which one do they really want to keep? As for Chiefs, which player do they really want to sign over the other? It is expected to go down to the wire as they are interested in two strikers of the same team. So, it will also be about the pricing from Pyramids and what Chiefs can afford to pay for them to get the striker they desire for next season. That's the decision they will have to make," the second insider pointed out.

Lakay, currently on loan at Ceramica Cleopatra FC, has featured in many matches this season with the priority of gaining game time. Chiefs’ ability to secure his signature will depend on overcoming competition for Mayele and navigating Pyramids FC’s higher demands.

At the time of publication, Kaizer Chiefs had not responded to Soccer Laduma’s inquiries on the player.
