Ex-Kaizer Chiefs Defender: Tsepo Masilela's Time Is Up At Higher Level

Tsepo Masilela

A former Kaizer Chiefs defender believes club veterans like Tsepo Masilela need to start taking a backseat in the team and help lead in a new generation at Naturena.   Read: Parker On Chiefs' Season: If We Were 10% More Mentally Stronger…   Amakhosi are set for a rebuilding phase after a third successive season without silverware, where head coach Steve Komphela resigned from his role in the final stages of the 2017/18 campaign following Chiefs' shock exit from the Nedbank Cup semi-finals.   The focus for the Soweto giants will now turn to the transfer market, where former Kaizer Chiefs full-back David Kannemeyer admits a striker should be a key target but believes the club also have a unique chance to start blooding in the next generation of Amakhosi defenders, with veterans like Masilela now tasked with sharing their vast experience with the younger players.   Read: In The Money! How Much Each Absa Premiership Team Earned   "I think, in my opinion, they (Chiefs) need to beef up the squad," Kannemeyer, who won the Telkom Knockout with the Glamour Boys in 2003, told the Siya crew. "We need another striker with Bernard Parker. We need a very good striker that can put the ball in the net.   "And I think even defensively, we need more youthful defenders, because I think (Tsepo) Masilela's time is up a bit now, for the higher level.   "No disrespect to him, I like him as a player, but I think we just need more freshness."   He continued: "I think Masilela is a very good player, he's done well within the game, he's played overseas, a good pro, but I think we just need to beef it up a bit more and get some fresh blood in."
