The kwaito legend, whose real name is Mduduzi Tshabalala, passed away on Sunday afternoon, after he succumbed to a battle with brain cancer.
He was 38 years old at the time of his passing. In his column in issue 991 of Soccer Laduma, Khumalo has paid tribute to the Nkalakatha hit-maker.
"The news of the passing of legendary musician Mduduzi 'Mandoza' Tshabalala came as a shock. This was a man I had a very good personal relationship with. It's not only football that can claim to have played a major role in uniting South Africa, because people like Mandoza and the music industry at large also played an equally important role. It is because of the man's influence that I decided to pay tribute to Mshengu, the musical legend who did it all. This is one of the guys whose music knew no racial boundaries, as everyone celebrated and enjoyed it. He was also a people person who played a massive role in society and the entertainment industry. I would really like to send out my heartfelt condolences to Mandoza's family, friends, the music industry and his fans. With Mandoza, we are talking about a young boy who came from a tough background in Soweto, who turned his life around and had a massive impact on people's lives. This legend contributed tremendously to uplifting and changing lives because he employed a lot of people and provided for a whole lot of others, not just his family, as we all know that's always the case in our communities. He was an outspoken man who always made sure to make his feelings known. He was also never shy to let you know how he felt about your job, be it on the field of play or whatever your line of duty. I remember he once told me of how much I inspired him also coming from Soweto, and we always had this brotherly support for one another," said Khumalo.
