Thulani Serero says that he doesn’t know what problems are stopping him from playing for Bafana Bafana, but says that what people say about him is unfair on his family.
Serero was left to focus on his Ajax Amsterdam career earlier this year when Shakes Mashaba decided to leave him out of Bafana’s African Cup of Nations squad, citing his lack of patriotism as the reason.
Now, with Ajax pushing for a record fifth consecutive Eredivisie title, ‘Cream’ has hit back by saying that it is not true that he doesn’t want to play for the national team.
Serero told Ajax’s official website, “I don’t know what problems the coach, or someone else, has with me. I had some expectations that I would not be selected, so I was not disappointed.
“Everyone will blame me that I do not want to play for the national team, but that is not true. If my mother is in the shopping centre, she hears these messages. For my family, I find it very annoying. The only reason I would like to come back to South Africa is for them.”
Meanwhile, discussing Ajax’s league aspirations, Serero said, “We had a difficult period, partly because of the many injuries we lost the rhythm.. Regarding the title, you should never say it's over. I think it is possible, we need only look at ourselves and keep winning. "
Ajax currently trail leaders, PSV, by 11 points with eight games to go.
