PSL Sets Date For Way Forward On Season

PSL Sets Date For Way Forward On Season

A date has been set for the Premier Soccer League to deliberate on the next step for domestic football after the 2019/20 season was suspended back in March.

The Siya crew has established a task team mandated by chairman Irvin Khoza nearly two months ago – following a decision taken by the board of governors to halt play due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus – has submitted its feedback on an exhaustive investigation regarding the possibility to play again behind closed doors.

A video conferencing call has been scheduled for Thursday, the Siya crew being reliably informed and it is there that it will become clearer whether the season, which was meant to end on May 21, can be completed in the coming weeks.

South Africa's lockdown period has meant that teams cannot set foot on their training grounds, being only restricted to a programme that they can follow at home.

In his last press conference, Khoza told the media that the PSL would look to complete the season by June 30. But this was back in mid-March, and with confirmed Covid19 cases and the death toll in SA rising as well as President Cyril Ramaphosa introducing different levels of high risk level to deal with the spread, there are a lot of factors to be considered.

It's now up to the league's executive committee to deliberate the findings and determine the readiness of clubs to go ahead should the government give the greenlight.

Prior to the suspension, Kaizer Chiefs were Absa Premiership log leaders with reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns four points behind them with a game to spare – making for an intriguing title race, especially with the two clubs still to play each other.

A few leagues around the world and on the continent have been cancelled already, but the board of governors is still determined to complete the PSL campaign.
