It was a nightmare start for Lionel Scaloni's men, who went 1-0 down 21 minutes into the game when Angel Romero converted his spot-kick after Miguel Almiron was fouled in the box.
Argentina, however, were not behind for long as they fought back for an equaliser just 20 minutes later through Nicolas Gonzalez, who rose highest to head the ball into the back of the net from a corner taken by Giovani Lo Celso, who had replaced the injured Exequiel Palacios just moments earlier.
The Albiceleste were perhaps lucky to be level considering their uninspiring first-half performance, in which captain Messi was taken good care of by the Paraguayans.
The FC Barcelona star, however, was able to find the back of the net in the 58th minute with a smart, first-time finish after being picked out by Tottenham Hotspur's Lo Celso. The goal, though, was overturned following a check by the VAR due to a foul in the build-up to the strike.
Nicolas Dominquez was adjudged to have fouled Romero prior to Messi's effort beating Paraguay goalkeeper Antony Silva, a decision that seemingly infuriated Scaloni and his coaching staff.
The rest of the match would see Messi, Lautaro Martinez and company squander fantastic chances, with Silva pulling off some good saves to keep the hosts down to just one goal.
