Seale On Chiefs' Dillemmas

Kaizer Chiefs have started the season uncertainly after a couple of defeats in their opening league and cup games of the 2013/14 PSL campaign.

Stuart Baxter appears to have been experimenting with his formation in recent times, as he attempts to juggle key players into his starting line-up.

Baxter used a back-five in the 3-1 defeat to SuperSport United last Saturday, as it seems he’s searching for a way to field Eric Mathoho, Tefu Mashamaite and Morgan Gould into the starting line-up.

The English coach also faces some dilemmas about who to select upfront, although it looks as if he’s favouring Knowledge Musona and Bernard Parker for the time being.

The club also has not strengthened the squad drastically during the past transfer window, with Musona being the only big name signing added to the roster.

The Siya crew asked Chiefs’ legend, Gardener Seale, about what he thinks of the dilemmas facing Baxter.

He said, “You’ve got the league to defend. You’ve got the cup competitions to defend. You’ve got African Champions League commitments. To play virtually the same 15 players every week, I don’t think we’re going anywhere."

"Regarding the system he played against SuperSport United, playing with five defenders, I’m not sure what Baxter’s trying to prove.”

Seale went on to say that Musona needs to be given time before being judged.

He said, “We shouldn’t be so judgemental on Musona. He’s been away for three years. A striker that misses chances is better than one who never appears in the mix. So, it’s way too early to judge the boy.”

Seale added, “I don’t mind Baxter using Lucky Baloyi in the centre of the park (against SuperSport) – we’ve got plenty of games. With Reneilwe Letsholonyane, he’s been in the starting line-up for a long time."

"I just want the coach to make sure he plays the other players in the squad. Play them! Why do you sign players and then leave them in the stands? We’ve got lots and lots of games to come – rotate and allow others to play. But, the formation last Saturday wasn’t for me, hey.”
